Carville: GOP Can't Abandon Christian Right

Analysts who say the Republicans should rethink their social platform and move away from the Christian right are off their rockers, James Carville tells the Huffington Post. “Their party would crumble,” the Democratic strategist says. A whopping 90% of conservative, white, married Christians identify themselves as Republicans, up from 64% 30 years ago. “There’s nowhere to go from 90%,” Carville argues, “and Republicans aren’t winning moderate and liberal Christians.”

The GOP now relies heavily on that voting bloc, but it’s shrinking fast. In the 1950s, four of five voters were married, white Christians; now, two in five are. That’s one of many statistics Carville points to in his book to prove Democrats are headed for an era of dominance. “I went to any number of Republican wise people and said ‘Tell me where this is wrong.’” Carville boasts. “And they said, ‘I can’t.’” (More James Carville stories.)
