Police are calling the killing of six Italians early today in Duisburg, Germany, a probable Mafia hit job, Der Spiegel reports. Five bodies with gunshot wounds to the head were found outside an Italian restaurant, and a sixth man died en route to the hospital. The incident is one of the largest mass murders in Germany in years.

Reports from Italy suggest that the hit – whose victims ranged from ages 16 to 39 – was the latest violence in a feud between rival Mafia clans from southern Italy. An Italian police director called the killings "an unprecedented settling of scores, also because it took place in a foreign country for the first time." (More Mafia stories.)
