Almost every demographic is quitting the GOP—despite a chairman who aims to win over everyone, including “one-armed midgets,” writes Kathleen Parker in the Washington Post. “The emerging consensus is that [Michael] Steele, though he means well, has the wrong personality for the job,” she notes. In a party torn between broadening its appeal and “purging” nonbelievers, he’s too “goofy,” shooting “from the lip,” making Joe Biden look restrained.

Steele recently likened the idea of an empathetic Supreme Court justice to Perez Hilton in the Miss California flap. He’s backed by the guy behind Bobby Jindal’s “perky performance” after the president’s speech to Congress. And his efforts in the winnable race for Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s House seat were ineffective. “Winning cures all ills in politics, to borrow a Republican friend’s words,” Parker notes. “And Steele isn’t winning.” (More Michael Steele stories.)
