The Pentagon denies a report that classified photos of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib depict rape and sexual abuse, Reuters reports. Britain’s Daily Telegraph “completely mischaracterized the images,” a spokesman said today. “None of the photos in question depict the images that are described.” The article quotes a former US general as saying the photos show “torture, abuse, rape and every indecency.”

The spokesman said he did not know if Gen. Antonio Taguba was quoted properly, but did point to a previous instance of alleged fabrication, in which the Telegraph reported that the photos had appeared on Australian TV. “I would caution you whenever you see a subsequent story on photos in this particular publication,” he said. “They now have, at least on two occasions, demonstrated an inability to get the facts right.” (More Antonio Taguba stories.)
