Roughly 900 people paid their respects to slain abortion doctor George Tiller today, while a small group of protesters gathered outside. Each of Tiller’s four children spoke, with the eulogy delivered by a longtime friend and fraternity brother, reports the Kansas City Star. “Dear God, get heaven ready, because Mr. Enthusiasm is coming,” he said, and though he said he wouldn’t get into the “political and media frenzy,” he praised Tiller’s courage and dedication to his work.
In the lobby sat a large portrait of Tiller, next to a wreath bearing the words, “TRUST WOMEN.” About 30 abortion rights supporters stood outside holding white carnations, with one holding a sign declaring Tiller a “civil rights hero,” the AP notes. About 20 protesters showed, all from the Westboro Baptist Church, which is notorious for picketing soldiers' funerals and calling their deaths God’s punishment for tolerance of homosexuality.
