Bullock: I Hate Romcoms

Sandra Bullock made a name for herself in romantic comedies but “can’t stand” them now, America's Sweetheart tells the Wall Street Journal. “I always read scripts and go, ‘I want to change the role of Sam to Samantha because it’s written better,’” Bullock says, citing the genre’s penchant for underselling female roles. And that’s what makes her new film The Proposal stand out.

It’s “a comedy that has elements of romance in it—just like the guys get to do,” Bullock says. And her career-driven character, who gets engaged to her assistant (Ryan Reynolds) to duck deportation, isn’t some lovesick stereotype: “She’s not missing anything. Everything—her love life, her family—is her job.” There’s even a just-for-laughs nude scene. “If my naked body needs to be in that scene to get a laugh,” Bullock says, “so be it.”
