Rudy Giuliani uses his tenure as New York mayor as a badge of courage as he campaigns for the White House, but now his record is being turned against him. Attack ads by GOP rival Mitt Romney portray Giuliani's New York as "sanctuary city" for illegals, while would-contender Fred Thompson blasts this administration's efforts to sue gun manufacturers.

Giuliani's opponents expected his moderate views on  touchstone Republican issues to sink him, but so far that hasn't happened, reports the New York Times. "They thought his stance on social issues would do the work for them,” said one expert. Now they "have to start hammering some of that stuff home.” (More Iowa stories.)
