Amid the praise for the late Ted Kennedy, one blogger reminds that the Massachusetts senator was the first member of Congress with his own website. “Back in 1993, this was no small feat,” writes Paul Blumenthal for the Sunlight Foundation. “At the time there were no congressional offices connected to the Internet.”
“If you can find a way for me to reach constituents using computer networks, do it,” Kennedy told then-systems administrator Chris Casey, who’d found a growing cache of online threads about various political issues. “Casey cautiously entered the fray to give information on bills the senator sponsored or votes the senator took,” Blumenthal notes. “A year later … Kennedy launched the first official website for a Senate office.”
