Days after the revelation that he was caught in a police sting operation in an airport men's room, Larry Craig will resign from the US Senate, state GOP officials tell the AP and NBC News. The conservative Republican has called a news conference for tomorrow morning in Boise, where he will announce that he's stepping down Sept. 30.

Craig was charged with disorderly conduct in June, and the revelation of his guilty plea left him virtually alone in his insistence that he did nothing wrong. The fall of the three-term senator was swift and steep, but not so fast that the governor doesn't already have his replacement lined up: Lt. Gov. Jim Risch reportedly has the job.
