Aymar Jean Christian is fed up with the faces that appear on the covers of women’s magazines. Once upon a time, the women there were simply pretty. “Then sometime in the late 1980s and early 1990s, celebrity became more important than beauty.” And that was great, because not only were those gracing the covers “beautiful but talented as well.” But now? “Kate Gosselin is dull housewife with bad hair. She is not a role model; she's not even a good villain.”

And it’s not just shiftless reality TV stars that irk Christian, she writes on Splice Today. Even the movie stars who show up on covers have done little work lately or appear because of their relationships, rather than any accomplishment. Men’s mags are “often populated with celebrities who are actually doing things and are doing them well,” partly because there are fewer of them and they can be “more selective.” But whatever. “Women’s mags aren’t even trying.” (More magazine cover stories.)
