Militants were holding several security officers hostage inside an intelligence wing of Pakistan's army headquarters today after staging an audacious assault on the nation's most powerful institution. At least four militants have between 10 and 15 hostages, says a military spokesman. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack in Rawalpindi.

The attack, which left 10 people dead, including four militants, is the third major militant strike in Pakistan in a week. The Pakistan Taliban has warned of more unless the government drops plans to launch a major offensive in South Waziristan. The gunmen in today's attack reportedly gained entrance to the site while disguised as soldiers before launching a gunbattle.
