Flood of Bush Memoirs May Trip Up GOP

The 2010 elections offer Republicans the first chance in a long time to run without the handicap of the unpopular Bush administration. Or not. Bush may be out of office, but the period between now and next November could see the release of five Bush-era memoirs—from Hank Paulson, Laura Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, Karl Rove, and Dubya himself. Dick Cheney follows in 2011. At least a few are likely to be highly controversial, and could bring memories of the Bush administration back to the political center stage.

Democratic strategists are pleased by the deluge of memoirs, as it will complement efforts to make 2010 a further referendum on Bush and remind voters of why they voted for change. “I think Obama is going to run against George Bush, as a means of deflecting attention from an incomplete agenda,” one strategist tells Politico.
