A-Rod Belts 51st Home Run
New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez was all smiles as he was congratulated by teammates following a two-run homer in the fourth inning of a baseball game with the Kansas City Royals, Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007 in Kansas City, Mo. The homer was Rodriguez's 50th of the season, and 514th for his career. (AP...   (Associated Press)

Alex Rodriguez reached another milestone in his outstanding season yesterday in Kansas City, knocking in his 50th and 51st home runs as the Yanks trounced the Royals 11-5. It's the first 50-plus home run season for a Yankee since 1961, when both Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris accomplished the feat. A-Rod now holds the single season record by a third baseman.

The previous record was held by Mike Schmidt of the Phillies, who hit 48 homers in 1980, and Adrian Beltre, who followed suit with the Dodgers in 2004. Rodriguez sits at 17th on the all-time homer list with 515, sandwiched between Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews at 512, and Willie McCovey and Ted Williams, both at 521. (More Alex Rodriguez stories.)
