Liberals questioned George W Bush's legitimacy and wanted him to fail, writes Michael Tomasky, so what's the difference between those Bush haters and the birthers, teabaggers, and "paranoid" “committed conservatives” who Tomasky writes are way “off the continuum” of political debate over Barack Obama’s presidency? No one thought “he was secretly out to destroy the US.”
“Liberals assumed that Bush was doing what he, his team and their supporters believed was the right thing,” Tomasky writes in the Guardian. “There was none of this Manchurian Candidate business” peddled by conservatives “certain that they represent ‘real’ American values” and that Obama is “an ideological Typhoid Mary, a carrier of unknowable and barely comprehensible infections.” But there’s nothing to be done: Obama could leave office with everything hunky-dory, Tomasky writes, and they "would still believe we'd escaped state ownership of everything and one-world government by a whisker.” (More Michael Tomasky stories.)
