(Newser) – A movement in Washington state to force the disclosure of the names of those who supported a referendum on same-sex marriage has George Will up in arms over “thuggish liberalism” and its chilling effect on political participation. Signing one’s name in support of such a measure is akin to voting—and the only reason to make the names public is so that opponents can be publicly harassed.

Will offers as a case in point the exposure of those who helped fund last year’s California Proposition 8: More than one contributor had to give up a job under pressure from gay and liberal forces, Will writes in the Washington Post. Those who would make such names public want to force “uncomfortable” conversations, but Will would rather see the Supreme Court make the thugs uncomfortable, and “block the spreading infection of using disclosure as a tool of liberal coercion.”
