Phillip Garrido, Jaycee Dugard’s accused kidnapper, says he “would like to apologize to every human being for what has taken place.” In a letter—his third sent to KCRA from prison—Garrido adds that, “through the spirit of Christ,” a “sexual problem believed to be impossible” was ended. Garrido’s lawyer calls him “a changed man” but says he may not be competent to stand trial.
"Mr. Garrido is expressing genuine remorse,” his public defender adds. A law professor says the letter would be considered “a partial apology,” and that Garrido is “certainly not taking full responsibility for his actions.” An earlier letter from Garrido to the station claimed Dugard’s free speech rights were being violated; her attorney says Dugard is “fully committed” to making sure Garrido answers for his alleged crimes.
