Beverly Hills, LA Ban Cat Declawing
Declawing a cat is now a misdemanor in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.   (Shutter Stock)

Furniture beware: Los Angeles and Beverly Hills have become the latest California cities to outlaw the declawing of cats. Santa Monica and San Francisco recently passed similar bans and others are considering banning declawing before next year, when a new state law on the regulation of veterinary medicine will effectively ban cities from banning declawing.

"The obvious truth is that declawing does nothing good for cats," an LA councilman told ABC7. "It is not clipping nails. It is actually amputation, sometimes leaving cats crippled and in pain for the rest of the lives." State veterinary groups oppose declawing bans, arguing that they will lead to more abandoned animals.
