Miami-Dade police last night cornered and shot dead the man suspected of killing one cop and wounding three others with an assault rifle yesterday morning. Officers tracked Shawn Sherwin LaBeet to a suburban apartment complex and fired when they saw he was heavily armed. "He's dead and you can quote me,'' one cop told the Miami Herald.

LaBeet, who eluded police for the better part of the day after a traffic stop that turned into a deadly shooting spree, was wearing body armor. The mayor and police chief announced his death at a press conference just after midnight. "He had the mindset of surviving a confrontation with law enforcement officers,'' said to cop Robert Parker.
