Screwy Senate has a flawed, but good bill

The health care bill is as good as it’s going to get, and progressives whining about it—or worse, trying to kill it—are being ridiculous. “In a normal democracy,” EJ Dionne writes, the majority support would quickly pass a public option or Medicare expansion. But the “bizarre habits of the Senate” mean “we are no longer a normal democracy,” and "power has passed to tiny minorities, sometimes minorities of one"

And the bill isn’t that bad, Dionne writes in the Washington Post. In fact, it makes “rather astonishing progress,” and lays the groundwork for stronger reform later. Jilted crusaders should “start organizing for the next health care fight,” not “label victory as defeat.” To Dionne, the future is bright. “It's a lot easier to improve a system premised on the idea that everyone should have health coverage than to create such a system in the first place."
