At 5’10” and a size 4, Lara Stone isn’t exactly poster girl for the obesity epidemic, yet that’s exactly what some call her, thanks to her position as one of the largest—er, curviest—supermodels out there. “What they say is ‘curvy,’ but you know they mean 'fat,' ” Stone tells Vogue. After trying, unsuccessfully, to lose weight with diet, exercise, and pills, Stone found herself in rehab last year after she turned to alcohol to cope.

Nowadays, Stone is sober and feeling better about herself. “People still tell me I’m fat, but when I look in the mirror, that’s not what I see,” she says, and many designers and magazine editors agree. Her star is rising, thanks in part to the fact that she actually has breasts, which simply make some clothes look better on her. “Sometimes I’ll call in a piece, it will arrive, and I’ll think, Why did I think I liked that?” one editor says. “Then I’ll remember, Oh, because Lara wore it.”
