Bernie Madoff has been receiving medical care for injuries suffered when he fell out of bed and apparently landed on his face. The Ponzi schemer was taken to Duke University Medical Center in Durham on Friday and treated for multiple facial fractures, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung, sources tell ABC11 in Raleigh-Durham. He was discharged this week and is being treated in the prison’s medical clinic.

Madoff’s lawyer says he’s only in the medical unit because he “had some dizzy spells and some high blood pressure.” He is known to suffer from high blood pressure. Prison officials acknowledged Madoff is in the clinic but wouldn’t confirm he visited the hospital. They vigorously denied an earlier report that he was attacked. (More Bernard Madoff stories.)
