The Simpsons is more than just a cartoon—it’s spawned essays, books, and lecture series, and the Telegraph takes a look at the lessons it can teach us:

• Family is the most important thing: Contrary to former president George Bush’s beliefs, The Simpsons celebrates family—complete with a non-absent, albeit dumb, father and a more realistic view of family life than most sitcoms.

• Homosexuality is OK: Homophobic Homer comes around, eventually officiating at a gay marriage, and Marge’s sister is a lesbian.
• Morals are more important than organized religion: Though all religions are mocked, Homer still attends church each week—and some experts have pointed out that the show is actually morally upstanding when it comes to most issues.
• All politics deserve teasing: Creator Matt Groening is a liberal, but the show rips left and right alike.
