The GOP need not abandon its core principles to become ascendant again—but it has to 'fess up to its failure to deliver what it preaches. The party could take a lesson from Domino’s Pizza, which in a new campaign basically says: "We blew it." The analogy “isn’t perfect,” Jonah Goldberg admits. “Last I checked, Domino’s didn’t get bogged down in an unpopular war.” But honesty is the best policy, in pizza and politics.
“Domino’s admits they lost their way, and they want a second chance,” Goldberg writes for the National Review. “They’re confronting the criticism head-on rather than denying it,” which is exactly what the GOP should do—while understanding what the problem is. “Americans didn’t stop liking what the Republican Party is supposed to deliver,” Goldberg writes. “They stopped liking what the GOP actually delivered.” So admit failure, but don’t give up on ideals. “That would be like Domino’s listening to critics and then deciding to get into the Chinese-food business.” (More Jonah Goldberg stories.)
