Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams died early this morning in South Carolina. He was 26. Adams, the Buccaneers' first-round draft pick in 2007, suffered cardiac arrest resulting from an enlarged heart, the local coroner said. The condition had not been diagnosed, and he had no known medical issues. The 6-foot-5, 258-pound Adams was an All-American at Clemson.

"It's crazy," Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, who became Adams' teammate after an October trade, told the Chicago Tribune. "You just don't know how to handle it. It's just sad, man. It's a bad deal." (More Gaines Adams stories.)
