A UK appeals court today freed Munir Hussain, who had been sent to jail for brutally beating a man who had invaded his home and threatened to his family. The Buckinghamshire businessman returned home with his family one evening to find burglars there; they tied him and his family up and forced them to crawl from room to room. Hussain escaped after throwing a coffee table at the men, and ran to get his brother for help.
When they returned, the intruders fled, but the brothers caught one and hit him with a cricket bat so hard the bat broke in three places—and left the burglar permanently brain damaged. His brother, Tokeer, was originally given a 39-month sentence, and Munir a 30-month one, but a judge yesterday suspended Munir’s sentence, and reduced Tokeer’s to two years.
