Scott Brown's victory may signal the beginning of the end of the standoff between the free-spending, big government nuts and the free-spending, hypocritical creeps, writes Peggy Noonan. Voters thought President Obama was a moderate before they saw his governing attitudes and what they would cost, and decided he was a nut, notes Noonan. Brown, meanwhile, is the latest Republican who's decidedly un-creepy, Noonan writes in the Wall Street Journal.
The Republican victors in Virginia, New Jersey, and now Massachusetts put themselves forward as "serious about spending, as independent, not narrowly partisan," and spoke directly to the concerns of voters, Noonan notes. Brown still needs to deliver by serving the way he campaigned—and to watch out for "congressional vampires" trying to claim his victory and suck the life from it—but for now, it feels like the start of a new and less creepy era, Noonan concludes.
