Pulitzers to Enquirer: No Prize for You

The National Enquirer is not eligible for a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting on John Edwards' affair with Rielle Hunter and the resulting child—not because it's a supermarket tabloid but because of a technicality. The Enquirer, you see calls itself a "magazine," and magazines can't receive the Pulitzer, prize administrator Sig Gissler said today. Executive editor Barry Levine is livid.

"Obviously, they're looking for excuses rather than have to objectively review our submission," Levine told ABC News. "If it wasn't this they would come up with another excuse, paying tipsters or something else. The Pulitzer committee needs to get their heads out of sand and recognize that media organizations like the National Enquirer, bloggers, Web sites, and local new news gathering sites made up of laid off reporters are the new face of American journalism and doing the heavy lifting."
