Rip Torn appeared in court in Connecticut today to face charges related to an alleged bank break-in Friday evening and was released on $100,000 bond. The 78-year-old actor will enter alcohol rehab as soon as possible, his lawyer said. The numerous charges against him include burglary, trespassing, and carrying a firearm while intoxicated. His lawyer acknowledged Torn had a loaded .22 revolver in his pocket but said it was "never brandished," reports the Register Citizen of Litchfield County.
"Obviously he wasn't there to commit a crime," said A. Thomas Waterfall, who described Torn as "lucid." The Dodgeball and 30 Rock actor was wearing several jackets, unzipped pants, and suspenders when he was arrested in a Litchfield Bancorp branch in Salisbury, where he lives. "The subject looked unsteady on his feet and I could clearly see both of his hand were empty," according to a state police report. Torn is due back in court Feb. 17.
