Richard Williamson a headache for St. Pius Society

The London-based Society of St. Pius X has done its best to hide away Richard Williamson since his infamous pronouncement last year that no Jews were killed in Nazi gas chambers. “We have lost one of our four bishops,” laments the group's leader, Bernard Fellay. “We can't use him for anything anymore.” Fellay likens Williamson to a piece of uranium. “It's dangerous,” but you can’t “simply leave it by the side of the road.”

But the Society has in some ways benefited from Williamson’s outburst. Overnight it became famous, a rallying point for the "right-wing, anti-modernist movement," reports Der Spiegel. The church, an ultra-conservative Catholic splinter faith, is well suited to the role. It despises the Vatican II modernizations, is virulently anti-gay, and its bishops were unperturbed when Williamson wrote that women were “less than zero,” and should submit to men. “We have an appeal for extremists,” says Fellay, “who we don’t even want.” (More Richard Williamson stories.)
