The United Auto Workers have turned up the pressure on contract talks with General Motors by setting a deadline of 11am ET today. The key issue of shifting health care costs to a union-run trust is said to have been settled, but other points remained unresolved yesterday. Still under discussion is the size of a cash bonus GM will give UAW workers for ratifying a deal, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The UAW often uses strike deadlines to gain leverage late the bargaining process; until late last night negotiations had been moving along on an hour-by-hour basis since the contract expired Sept. 14. If an agreement is not reached, it would mark the first strike over national contract bargaining by the UAW in over 20 years. (More United Auto Workers stories.)
