Jeff Bridges took home the top acting award at the Academy Awards tonight for his turn as a boozy country singer trying to clean up his act in Crazy Heart, and Sandra Bullock won for her role as the adopted mom of an unlikely football prodigy in The Blind Side. Bridges, a beloved Hollywood veteran, had been nominated four times in the previous 38 years without winning; for Bullock it was her first nomination. Villainous roles snatched the supporting acting prizes: Precious co-star Mo'Nique as a loathsome mother and Inglourious Basterds co-star Christoph Waltz as a sociable Nazi fiend.

Other Oscars:

  • Best animated feature: Up
  • Best original screenplay: The Hurt Locker
  • Best adapted screenplay: Precious
  • Best makeup: Star Trek
  • Best costume design : The Young Victoria
  • Art direction: Avatar
  • Cinematography: Avatar
