At least 12 people were killed today when a suicide car bomber struck a police building in Lahore. Scores were injured in the attack, including women and children walking to a nearby school. The bombing, at a location where "high value" terror suspects are interrogated, was the first major attack in weeks, and proved that insurgents have the ability to strike deep in the nation, not just along the vulnerable borders. No one has yet claimed resposibility, but authorities suspect the Pakistani Taliban and their allies.
The explosion left a huge crater and panic in its wake. "With the huge bang, blocks and pieces of the roof fell upon us and 6 of us were wounded," said a young man, who suffered a head injury that was covered by a bloodstained cloth. "It was total chaos and people were running and crying for help." (More Pakistan stories.)
