FCC Launches Internet Speed Test Tool

The FCC is about to unveil a 10-year plan to make high-speed Internet a reality in all parts of the US, reports the New York Times. As part of its push, the agency has set up a way for consumers to test the speed of their Internet connection through this website. It's a way to compare actual vs. advertised speeds, notes Reuters.

FCC officials are expected to present their plan to make broadband the nation's "dominant communication network" to Congress on Tuesday, write Brian Stelter and Jenna Wortham at the Times. The plan—expected to set off a huge turf fight among the nation's telecom giants—includes subsidies for providers to wire rural America, an auction of broadcast spectrum to make space for wireless devices, and the creation of a universal set-top box that connects both to the web and cable service.
