Sports | Tiger Woods Return of Tiger Woods (in 3D) Should Smash Records CBS expects big numbers for the Masters in April By Nick McMaster Posted Mar 16, 2010 4:20 PM CDT Copied In this April 14, 2002, file photo, Tiger Woods, wearing his green jacket, gives a thumbs up as he celebrates winning the Masters golf tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. (AP Photo/Elise Amendola, File) Tiger Woods' return to golf in April is expected break records in TV viewership for CBS. Woods' victories at the Masters in 1997 and 2001 attracted 15.8 million and 15 million viewers, ranking as the first and second most-watched. Those could be small potatoes. The network's sports chief predicted (prior to Tiger's announcement) that his return would be "the biggest media event other than the Obama inauguration in the past 10 or 15 years." "He has become so controversial and interesting, people will watch even if it’s the first time they’ve watched golf in their lives,” one analyst tells Bloomberg. “This is the best thing that could happen for the TV networks, the advertisers and for the PGA.” It won't hurt that Comcast will broadcast this year's tournament in 3D, notes Variety.
