A Florida group that opposes adoption by gay couples is guilty of using stereotypes in its “scare tactics,” blogger gwen writes for Sociological Images. The Florida Family Policy Council used a photo of an “androgynous-looking, angry, mannish lesbian couple” to alert members that a different pair had been allowed to adopt a relative’s child. The actual women are “attractive by mainstream heterosexual norms of femininity. They look happy and non-threatening. They are simply not sufficiently menacing.”
Also bad, gwen adds, is how the FFPC brings social class into the matter with the use of mullets. The head of the council apologized after being called on it by the Orlando Sentinel, though Scott Maxwell notes, John Stemberger “made a point of saying that none of his recipients had complained about” the mixup.
