The first round of the President's Cup couldn't have gone much better for the US team—or much worse for the International team. Strong performances by a number of golfers, including Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, kept the International team from winning a single match.

Were it not for Jack Nicklaus playing the role of diplomat and encouraging Phil Mickelson and Woody Austin to concede a difficult putt to Vijay Singh, the International team would have been shut out altogether.  While the strong start bodes well for the US Team, they can't count on the Internationals to roll over. "You can't win on the first day," said the International captain. (More golf stories.)
