Watching Alan Greenspan's don't-blame-me testimony on Capitol Hill leads Frank Rich to pronounce that "we live in a culture where accountability and responsibility are forgotten values." It's always somebody else's fault. This goes beyond the financial sector, with hollow apologies and obfuscations cropping up everywhere from the Vatican to Tiger Woods' press conferences. Only David Letterman, it seems, knows how to do it right.
In his New York Times column, Rich says the financial bigwigs sound familiar: "It’s remarkable how often apologists for Wall Street’s self-inflicted calamity mirror the apologists for Washington’s self-inflicted calamity of Iraq." Everyone got misled by "bad intelligence" on WMDs, therefore "no one is to blame." Both arguments are bunk. President Obama seems content to let the Bush transgressions slip into history. Let's hope he gives the financial collapse the "serious reckoning" it deserves.
