In a particularly deft political comic routine, the Daily Show compares the gun-lovers of the "open carry" movement to those they're not likely to embrace—gays fighting for their rights. "We want gun lovers to come out of the closet," says pistol-packing John Pierce, playing right into Wyatt Cenac's schtick in last night's program. Open carriers like Pierce, who holsters a pistol on his hip when he heads into Starbucks, "can't escape the cruel intolerance of bigots," notes a faux-ly grim Cenec.
The "well-financed hate groups" opposed to gun-toters include moms disgusted by "displays of public protection." Cenec quietly queries Pierce: "Did you experiment in college? Does your wife know?" Things may improve for the open carry men if only they can manage to convince schools to carry their latest children's book: Mommy Carries Two Glocks. The satire is one more stellar example, Gawker notes, of the Daily Show's ability to "integrate silly comedy with real political satire."
