An angry Robert Gates yesterday slammed Wikileaks just as the online operation is threatening to release a new secret military video revealing the 2009 US airstrike that killed some 100 civilians in Afghanistan. "These people can put out whatever they want and are never held accountable for it," said the defense secretary, referring to Wikileaks' last footage showing civilians, including two Reuters photographers, shot down by US helcopter gunners in Iraq in 2007.
Such videos show "the war through a soda straw and you have no context or perspective," Gates said. But Gates also emphasized that he and Gen. Stanley McChrystal take the issue of civilian casualties seriously. "Every time I talk to Gen. McChrystal, he talks about this," Gates told the Los Angeles Times. "His view is the civilian casualty question is a strategic question in Afghanistan. He thinks that is one of the greatest risks to the success of our strategy."
