New Ash Cloud Heads Towards UK

The Eyjafjallajokull volcano spewed a fresh cloud of ash into the air yesterday, threatening Europe with more travel chaos even as flights began to resume. "The volcanic eruption in Iceland has strengthened and a new ash cloud is spreading south and east towards the UK," Britain's National Air Traffic Service warned. "This demonstrates the dynamic and rapidly changing conditions in which we are working."

Scottish airports will reopen on schedule today but the open zone won't extend as far south as London airports, the air traffic service says. Around a third of Europe's 28,000 scheduled flights took off yesterday under a plan that carved the continent up into three zones, the AP reports.
