Can the man with the No. 1 talk show in England fill Barbara Walters' formidable high heels? That's what NBC is banking on. America's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan is "pretty close" to sealing a deal with the network to host a periodic primetime interview program. "I do one-on-ones—like Barbara Walters," he tells the New York Post. "I am not an entertainment talk show, late night kind of guy." Of course, "Thinking of Piers as a Barbara Walters figure gives me the giggles," says an NBC programming head. "He doesn't sugarcoat anything."
The former newspaper editor has landed some big TV interviews back home—Simon Cowell first admitted he was engaged to Morgan, and Gordon Brown shared the pain of his baby daughter's death with him. Morgan put a toe into the water in March by working the Oscars red carpet for the Today show. "I got Sandra Bullock to say to me that she wakes up every morning thinking how lucky she is to have Jesse as a husband," says Morgan. "And four days later..."
