Conservative leader David Cameron was widely seen as the winner of last night's third and final British election debate after Gordon Brown failed to make the breakthrough he desperately needed. The Conservative leader, in a debate focusing on the economy, promised to make sweeping budget cuts if he gains power and warned that Britain's economy is in danger of going the way of Greece's, the Washington Post reports.

Brown often seemed sidelined as Cameron sparred with Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg and many analysts predict that his Labour Party will finish third in next week's vote, its worst performance in decades. The prime minister acknowledged he had tripped up the day before by referring to a voter as a "bigoted woman" when he thought his microphone was off. "There is a lot to this job, and as you saw yesterday, I don't always get it right," he said. "But I do know how to run the economy, in good times and bad." (More Nick Clegg stories.)
