Michelle Obama to GWU Grads: 'Keep Giving'

When Michelle Obama agreed to be George Washington University's commencement speaker, she challenged the school's 5,000 seniors to do 100,000 hours of community service. They completed 163,980 hours, reports the Washington Post, spurring the first lady to joke at today's ceremony that if she had known they were so motivated, "I probably would have picked a higher number."

Most of Obama's address was a serious call to stay involved not just in domestic volunteer work but in international affairs. "I'm asking your generation to be America's face to the world," she said. "Now I'm not a president. I'm just a citizen," the first lady said in wrapping up her 30-minute speech. "But as a citizen I'm asking you as graduates of this global institution to seize those responsibilities gladly. I'm asking you to play your part."
