Connecticut Attorney General and Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal has misled voters on numerous occasions to indicate that he served in Vietnam when in fact he worked to dodge service, a New York Times investigation finds. "We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam," the Democrat, who never served in Vietnam, told a ceremony honoring veterans in 2008. Blumenthal obtained 5 deferments between 1965 and 1970. After 1970, he served in a Marine Corps Reserve unit based in Washington, DC.
Blumenthal has often used language at patriotic events that gives the impression he served in Vietnam, and news articles about him have often described him as a Vietnam vet. "When we returned, we saw nothing like this,” he said at one rally honoring troops returning from Iraq. “Let us do better by this generation of men and women.” Blumenthal says he "misspoke" at the 2008 event, and insists that he has always tried to make it clear that his Marine Corps service never took him overseas.
