'Top Kill' Isn't Working

BP's efforts to plug the leak aren't working. The latest "junk shot" failed to stop the flow of oil last night, and engineers have once again halted the "top kill" pumping while they review data, reports the New York Times. "Right now, I would not be optimistic," says an anonymous technician. Publicly, company officials say they're not ready to call it quits on the strategy.

“We’re going to keep at this,” said chief operating officer Doug Suttles. “If we believe it will work we should stay with it as long as it takes. If we think it won’t we will go on to the next.” (More Gulf oil spill stories.)
