With all the fervor over organic food, it’s surprising that so little attention has been paid to the many chemical ingredients we put on our face each day—until now. A February protest by a group of students in Maine was one of a number that have been recently drawing attention to the toxic ingredients in our cosmetics, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

“The European Union has banned more than 1,000 ingredients from cosmetics, while the United States has banned only 10,” says one protester. The FDA can’t make cosmetic companies test or recall their products, and there is no federal regulation of the ingredients (a total of 168 chemicals for the average woman’s product and 85 for the average man’s) of personal care products. Those who advocate more regulation say many of those chemicals, absorbed through the skin, are toxic and linked to cancer, asthma, birth defects, and other health problems.
