An Iraqi doctor whose wife and 20-year-old son were the first of 17 civilians killed by Blackwater guards on Sept. 16 talks to CNN about his loss, saying a storm of bullets blew apart his loved ones—his wife, a doctor, and his son, a medical student. They were going to pick him up at a hospital when the shooting began at al-Nisoor Square in Baghdad.

Bystanders say the son was killed first, and she cradled what remained of his body and cried for help. "They understood the call for help," he says tearfully. "They sprayed her with bullets." The doctor and his two remaining children speak quietly about the importance of justice. "We ask the judge who takes this case to think before he rules, to be satisfied with his ruling as if he were, God forbid, personally involved," says the 46-year-old man. (More Blackwater stories.)
