In Bob Dudley, BP Has Picked Another Loser

Talk about failing upward: John Helmer, a Moscow-based blogger and journalist, reacts to BP's promotion of Bob Dudley to the CEO spot vacated by the humiliated Tony Hayward with incredulity. "To pick Dudley requires a spill of brains in the BP board room that is blacker than the spill around the Macondo field," he writes, chronicling a series of colossal screw-ups on Dudley's part during his former posting in Moscow.

For chapter and verse, read here in the Business Insider, but the takeaway is that Dudley so radically misjudged and mishandled BP's Russian holdings that he got the company in trouble with partners, rivals, and both the Russian and British governments. He was eventually ousted from the country, Helmer writes, and leadership of the Russian holdings—called TNK-BP—passed to BP's Russian partners. Nice work, he notes, considering the TNK produces 33% of BP's total output, twice what all the company's wells in the Gulf of Mexico contribute.
