Protests Flare in Arizona Over New Law

The ruling blocking key parts of Arizona's immigration law hasn't cooled tempers in the state. Dozens of people were arrested in Phoenix yesterday as protesters gathered to demonstrate against the law. Protesters surrounded a downtown jail and the office of controversial sheriff Joe Arpaio, who vowed that the protests won't stop him from launching one of his immigration sweeps, ABC News reports.

"Joe Arpaio has picked the easy targets, the day laborers," one protester said. "Let's go after the real criminals and stop wasting our money." Protests also flared in Tucson, New York City, and Los Angeles, where a dozen people were arrested. Provisions of the law making it a crime to pick up day laborers went into effect yesterday, although several who spoke to the media said they didn't feel any more afraid than they had the previous day, and they hadn't seen any police.
