California congresswoman likely to face 'trial'

Maxine Waters broke conflict of interest rules when she intervened on behalf of a bank in which her husband was an investor, the House ethics committee will argue in the California Democrat's forthcoming "trial," reports Politico. She could have copped a plea but vehemently refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing. "The case against me has no merit," she wrote in a rebuttal released today along with the specifics of the charges against her.

"I welcome the opportunity to show my constituents and the American public that the accusations against me are frivolous and unfounded," she wrote. A subcommittee has been formed that will rule on the matter; if the panel finds she broke House rules, the full committee will recommend a punishment to the House.
